There are more than 1.5 million stolen items in the police database. This means there’s a chance that you could be buying a stolen bicycle, laptop or scooter without your knowledge. Fortunately, with the Stop Heling app you can see exactly whether the product you’re buying has been stolen or not. Users can easily check serial numbers, barcodes and licence plates with the app, and find out whether or not the product has been registered as stolen in the Dutch police's database of declarations. Handy, right?

Prevent fencing of stolen goods

Commissioned by the police, we developed the Stop Heling app with the aim of decreasing trade in stolen goods. Before you as a consumer want to buy a second-hand product, either online or in a store, you can check with the app whether this product has been stolen. The app scans a serial number, barcode or licence plate and you can see immediately whether or not you’re buying a fairly-traded product. You can also register your own goods, including a serial number and photo, in the app: very useful for insurance after theft, fire, or police reports. You can export this information as a PDF and email this file to yourself, or save it securely in the cloud. If your house is then broken into, you will immediately have all the details of the stolen items at hand in the app for your report to the police. This data is entered into the police database so that everyone can see that the items are stolen, thus preventing them from being resold.

The functionalities

The app had to be as easy and user-friendly as possible, and it is, partly because the team of the national police knew exactly what it wanted and how it wanted to use the app. This made the collaboration very easy. There are no complicated steps in the app: users can quickly add items to their personal list, and can scan products and barcodes at the touch of a button. The scanner identifies whether it’s looking at a serial number, barcode or licence plate. The more people use the app, the better the police can prevent resales from theft.
