Astma App

A tool that helps asthma patients to use their medication correctly

Many asthma patients find it difficult to use their respiratory medication in the right way. Pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca wanted to change this. We developed an app for them that helps patients to take their medicines at the right times. With the Astma App, patients can see immediately whether or not they’re taking their medication correctly. This is very handy for them, and very useful for doctors, because it prevents asthma patients from developing lung complaints in the long term.

Creating awareness

Many asthmatics take respiratory medication to help them feel less congested. They are only allowed to take a certain type of medication twice a week, but research showed that a large group of patients were taking this medication more often. In the short term this works well against shortness of breath, but in the long term patients can suffer from problems with their lungs. AstraZeneca wanted our help to find a solution.

An interactive app

We developed the interactive Astma app. Every time asthma patients take their medication, they register it in the app by clicking on a hot air balloon. This hot air balloon shows whether they are using the medication correctly. Are patients taking their medication too often? If so, the hot air balloon sinks and turns red. The app also tells them how much medication they can still use and when they have used too much. The hot air balloon rises to the top again once a new week has started and patients start their new medication series.

User research

The Asthma app was developed in collaboration with the National eHealth Living Lab. Together we looked at how we could encourage the responsible use of medicines. We developed a prototype of the app and tested it on the target group. We learnt a lot from this research, and as a result we were able to develop an app that works perfectly for our users.
